A Closer Look at the Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard
April 30th, 2011 by
The Rii Mini Keyboard is just what it claims on the packaging, a mini keyboard. And what that simply means is that in terms of size, it’s much smaller than a regular keyboard. Measuring just 5.9×2.3×0.5 inches, the Rii is a midget compared with the average 18x2x8 inches – and it’s very lightweight at 3.2 oz.. A person who puts a premium price on portability will discover the small size and weightlessness of this mini keyboard a delight, being so convenient to have with you. Typing is not hard at all on this little device, which fits well between your hands.
The Rii is terrific for using with your laptop computer or desktop PC, and also your PS3 or any other gaming system that supports this gadget. Wires are redundant with the Rii’s wireless capability, supplied by a Bluetooth USB receiver, so you can quickly connect to other wireless electronic units. It boasts of a full QWERTY keyboard and it likewise has a touchpad, which is akin to those found on laptops. A badly lit surrounding won’t be any trouble as the Rii has 26 LED lights built into it. The device runs off of two lithium ion batteries, which are included with the product and are also rechargeable.
As far as reviews go, there are many on Amazon, mostly with 4 or 5 stars. However, as suggested by a quantity of 1,2 and 3 star votes, the product may initally seem great but prove to be less so with time. One observation was that the device didn’t work properly with an Ubuntu system beyond a range of 30 feet, but it was quite good within that. But then, a range of 30 ft is pretty good. If you plan on using this keyboard for multimedia purposes then you’ll be pleased to know that there are buttons for volume and playlist control. Buttons that aren’t regularly used also feature on this keyboard, which is good because they are sometimes needed so it would be an inconvenience if they weren’t there.
Naturally, this review would be incomplete if it did not mention the downsides. The touchpad functions rather well; nevertheless, it can be a bit of a pain in the neck as it isn’t always precise, unlike most regular laptop touchpads. One other pain in the neck – which can be circumvented by using the mouse buttons for left and right alternatively – is that the touchpad is a little insensitive to tapping. It is also worth noting that the keys are directly underneath each other, and not 50% offset as we are used to with the bigger keyboards. Although it takes some getting used to, it is not a serious issue.
All in all, the Rii is a nice device if you’re searching for a smaller size that also features a mouse touchpad. Overall, the upsides greatly overshadow the few downsides, and the price is superb.
